Summary Description

Gilfach Goch is the archetypal coal field settlement, a remote area of pastoral land until the coming of the coalmines and the railway. The community developed in a series of semidetached houses in cul-de-sacs rather than the usual terraces and in 1910-14 the first Welsh Garden village promoted by Welsh Garden Cities Ltd. It was the setting for the novel ‘How Green was my valley’ by Richard Llewellyn. Reference Buildings of Wales – Glamorgan 2001 The Encyclopaedia of Wales
