Summary Description

Tylorstown is in the Rhondda Fach an area which grew with the development of collieries at the end of the C19. Because of the nature of the area, steep valley sides, the density of housing such that in the early C20 there were 450 people to the hectare – remarkably high. The area gets its name from being on the south side of the Pendyrys Colliery which was opened in 1873-76 by the Tylor’s Colliery Company – its founder was a London Quaker Alfred Tylor who having married the daughter of the founder of Treharris, bought the mineral rights of Pendyrys farm.
