Summary Description

The town developed as a response to the Act of Parliament of 1825 to build a dock and tramway to meet the export coal and iron from the Maesteg and Tondu areas. The Duffryn, Llynfi and Porthcawl railway opened in 1828 and the town developed as a place for miners to take their holidays and the town has developed as a holiday resort.
