Summary Description

Neath developed firstly as a religious suite with the founding of Neath Abbey in 1130 on the western bank of the Neath River. The town with its castle effectively marked the western edge of Norman Glamorgan with the Gower left to the west. The town developed in the C19 with the coming of the metallurgical industries and coal mining/ Pevsner describes the town centre as the best in Wales. Reference The Encyclopaedia of Wales
