Summary Description

Barry, now best known for its seaside area – Barry Island, largely developed as a result of David Davies’s decision to take away the Marquis of Bute monopoly control of the exports of coal through Cardiff Docks. In this Davies was successful but it led to an oversupply of coal ultimately causing the downfall of the coalfields of mid and east Glamorgan. The modern town is very much a commuter town.
