Summary Description

Aberdare is an ancient large upland parish originally a chapelry of Llantrisant. The Gadlys Iron works opened in 1827 and the first steam coal mine a decade later. By 1856 Aberdare was producing over 1 million tons of steam coal annual and the Cynon Valley was the centre for the production of steam coal. Today the town has the appearance of a small market town. Cwmdare is the home of the Dare Valley County Park. Reference Buildings of Wales – Glamorgan 2001
