There are 3 levels of listing: Grade I, II* & II. The majority of buildings which are of special interest are Grade II. A much smaller number of particularly important buildings are listed as Grade II*. Buildings of exceptional interest (approx 2% of the total number of listed buildings) are Grade I.
Ancient monuments and archaeological remains of national importance are protected by law. Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service is responsible for compiling a schedule (list) of these ancient monuments, some of which can be found in churches and churchyards. The present church is the third one to stand near to the castle, this one was built in 1886-90 Nicholson and Son of Hereford on land given by W D Powell of Nanteos. It replaced an earlier church of 1833. In 1905-6 Nicholson & Hartree provided a design for a spire but it was never built.

A description of the exterior of the church and the main features of the churchyard.
A Victorian Decorated Gothic church of triple nave, chancel with a north Lady chapel and a south vestry/organ chamber with a west tower and a lean-to Baptistry which was added in 1906. It was constructed with bull-nosed rubble masonry with freestone dressings all beneath a slate roof with cresting. There are 1300 windows with varied tracery. The three-stage tower has crenelated parapets and a polygonal south west stair turret with a deeply splayed entrance.

Heavily tooled interior of Bath stone with red sandstone banding. Above is the timber roof with crenelated wall plates and carved head corbels. The chancel roof also has bosses and is boarded to the east bay. The five-bay nave has foliage capitals to quatrefoil piers elaborately leaf carved by R Boulton& Sons made from Ancaster stone. At the entrance to the baptistry is an octagonal Early English font with a pyramidal cover on a stepped base. The chancel rood and screen are the work of W D Caröe 1921 -7, delicately carved and unobtrusive. The reredos depicts the Last Supper. There is much oak carving by Geflowski but not the Puginesque eagle lectern which is the work of Clarke of Hereford working to a Nicholson’s design. The stained glass: ‘The Ascension’ A O Hemmings, 1889; ‘The Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and St John’, A O Hemmings, 1903; ‘The Three Marys Visit the Empty Tomb’, A O Hemmings, 1903; ‘The Adoration of the Magi’, A O Hemmings, 1903; ‘The Annunciation to the Shepherd, A O Hemmings, 1903; ‘Angels’, A O Hemmings, 1903;’Christ with St Mary Magdalene and St Peter’, James Powell & Sons, 1914; St Cecilia and St Francis’, Lawrence lee, 1962. The bell was cast in 1832 by Thomas II Mears.
