Summary Description

Llawhaden was a medieval village up-graded to borough status by Bishop Thomas Bek 91280-93). A Royal licence for weekly markets, annual fairs and a hospice was founded. By 1326 there were 174 tenement plots in occupation and it was the richest Barony associated with St David’s cathedral. A castle, perhaps dating from C12 was established and mentioned by Gerald of Wales in 1175. A Roman road coming west from Carmarthen is adjacent to the churchyard.
