Summary Description

Robert of Rhuddlan built a motte and bailey castle here in 1079 at a time when his cousin Hugh of Avranches was earl of Chester and a Borough was established. The stone castle was part of the first wave of castles built by Edward I when he invaded Wales from Chester – it was linked to the sea by a wide canal. Edward’s Statute of Rhuddlan established the Welsh Counties of Anglesey, Caernarfon, Merioneth, Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire. The rest of Wales was in the hands of the Marcher Lords save for that which was left over which became Flintshire under the authority of the Justiciar of Chester.
