Summary Description

Set in one of the World Heritage sites Conwy church is part of one of Edward I bastide towns developed along with the castle as an English settlement town to provide support for Edward I conquest of Gwynedd. The church stands in the centre of the town probably on the site of Aberconwy Abbey. In 1186 a colony of monks was sent north from Strata Florida Abbey (in Ceredigion) to found a daughter house in North Wales, initially they settled outside Caernarfon but by 1192 they had moved to Aberconwy. The church is on the site of the Abbey church while the Abbey itself moved in 1283 upstream to Maenan to enable James of St George to build the town and castle for Edward 1. Burgess plots surround the church. Reference Buildings of Wales –Gwynedd 2009 World Heritage Site listings The Towns of Wales - Harold Carter Cadw Listing Notice. Abbeys & Priories of Medieval Wales
