Summary Description

Holt sits at a bridging point on the River Dee. Roman kilns provided the tiles and pottery for the Roman Fort at Chester. After being granted the Lordship of Bromfield and Yale the Warenne family built Holt castle – a regular pentagon designed by James of St George (Castle builder to Edward I) and the bastide plan still gives the basic structure to the town plan. Holt church is one of the ‘Stanley’ churches and the 15 arch bridge connects Holt with Farndon, almost a pair of merged communities.
